Philip Roehrs, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Virginia, and Clinical Director of Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy in the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. Throughout his almost 20 year career, he has been focused on diagnosing, treating, and providing potentially curative treatments for children with complex, life-threatening immune deficiencies, bone marrow failure syndromes, blood disorders, relapsed/refractory leukemias and other malignancies, utilizing hematopoietic stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplants). Despite the marked advancements in the care of these patients, a significant portion of these children (20-50%) will succumb to their disease and/or complications of treatments, leading to countless experiences of caring for terminally-ill children. He has observed episodes of terminal lucidity directly in his clinical practice, along with receiving secondary reports of terminal lucidity from parents and other caregivers of his patients.
